Treating Jaw Pain In Patients Throughout Raleigh & Durham, NC
TMD (temporomandibulardysfunction) is something many people can experience at one point or another. It is, to put it simply, the term physical therapists use to identify an issue with the jaw joint known as the TMJ, or the temporomandibular joint.
In the TMD patients we see at Ashburn Physical Therapy, the main cause of their pain is stress. Think about it: when you're stressed, you are generally a bundle of nerves which can make you clench your body, particularly your jaw. Most of us then take that stress home with us and unfortunately, our daytime clenching transitions into nighttime grinding of our teeth. Not only is this rough on your teeth, but it also puts stress on your TMJ that can lead to pain upon waking.
Luckily, this jaw dysfunction is treatable with physical therapy, and many patients experience a reduction in pain after just one visit. Many more continue treatment for 4-6 weeks depending on the severity of their case, which can be enough time for us to not only treat the pain but resolve the issue altogether.
